The energy sector and the (chemical) industry are in a transition towards: the use of new feedstock, the use of renewable energy, process and energy efficiency, introduction of circularity and, of course, carbon capture and re-use. The group Sustainable Process & Energy Systems based in Delft (The Netherlands) works on these transitional topics.

The core technical expertise is Gas- Treatment and Conversion, Separation technologies, Bio-based Building Block synthesis and Energy Conversion & Storage. We work for- and with (renewable) energy and chemistry companies and in a network of international knowledge partners.

In order to achieve the 2050 European energy and climate sustainability goals for renewable energy, a multi-energy approach on energy generation and conversion is required to release the full potential of intermittent renewable energies. Hybrid storage (i.e. storage of electricity and heat) is indispensable for creating flexibility, allowing to optimize the balance between the supply and consumption profiles of both electricity and heat for the lowest cost. A method to achieve this is in the application of redox flow reactor technology, consisting of a metal bed where the oxidation step takes place via the oxidation of metals (eg copper) using air whilst releasing heat. Reduction of the metal oxides formed is realized by using (green) hydrogen, a process step that is exothermic as well

 

The Position

As a research engineer, you will, either independently or in a team execute, analyse and report on experiments in the lab using a diverse set of equipment of thermal, physical and physiochemical nature. Consider for instance the set up and execution of experiments using the redox flow reactor but you will also work on other projects in the field of gas treatment, energy conversion and storage and separation technologies.

Experiments are dynamic in nature with means that you have to be able to adjust the experiment settings and parameters along the execution of experiments and provide input on future experiments. Using your creative mindset together with a pro active and result oriented approach helps you to achieve this.

Last but not leas: results obtained have to be analyzed and reported in an accessible way. A good command of word/excel and powerpoint is thereby essential.The 

Your Profile

An ideal candidate would have the following background:

  • You have an B.Sc. or M.Sc.  in e.g. chemical engineering, physics,  process technology or mechanical engineering 
  • You have at least 3 years of working experience in a process laboratory environment or similar; Candidates with no relevant working experience are invited to apply as well
  • You have a good mastery of the English language, both verbal and written. Knowledge of Dutch is a pre
  • Having affinity with thermal systems, experience with Labview and pressurized systems is a plus.

The position is best suited to an enthusiastic person with the following characteristics: 

  • You have a hands-on mentality, and are very comfortable with working in a lab.
  • You can work independently in lab environment
  • You are able to set up measurement equipment for tests and performing, analyzing and reporting the experiments
  • You are comfortable in maintaining, repairing and upgrading laboratory set-ups
  • You are safety conscious and accurate
  • A drive to develop innovative solutions to technically challenging problems by combining the right mix of intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic approach
  • Good interpersonal skills and proactive communication
